Review: Defending Allye by Susan Stoker
There is something to be said about a retired SEAL who's still out there trying to save people from the bad guys. When I read the blurb for this book, I knew I had to read it. I mean, come on. It's about a sexy alpha who saves the day and gets the girl too. A hero who is protective, possessive and turns up the heat in the bedroom? I will throw elbows to get a chance to read that kind of story. Sorry, not sorry.
Story Line: Gray is part of a Mountain Mercenary group now that he's retired from the SEALS. His next job is to rescue a woman from a human traffic ring. That woman (Allye) knocks him off his socks. But like the good guy he is, once she's officially rescued, he goes on to the next job. Except Allye isn't like the rest. No, she has something very valuable in her possession and finds herself face to face with Gray once again. I loved this story line so much. It wasn't your typical, that's for sure. There are times I've read books about ex-military having their own security business on the side, they rescue a girl, fall for said girl, yadda yadda yadda. That's not at all how this story goes. Sure, there's falling head over heals. But there is so much more. My heart pounded out of my chest at times, I swooned, my toes curled and I smiled at my kindle like a lunatic quite a bit.
Interaction: Gray is all alpha. And Allye is downright hilarious at times. She's incredibly strong, yet very sweet. They fall for one another, yet they don't even realize it's happening. I remember a couple occasions where I thought to myself (out loud) awww you're falling for her (him). It was absolute magic to read these two growing closer and closer to one another and not even realize what was happening. They came together under less than desirable circumstances, but you know what they say - everything happens for a reason. This book made me a firm believer in that statement.
Laundry: So. Much. Laundry. As you begin reading, you may be like me and try to predict what kind of burn this is going to be. Since our book opens with a rescue mission, I was convinced I was going to be slowly burning and angsting with our main characters for a while. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to wait for the naughty stuff as long as I anticipated. But don't you worry your pretty little head, it's worth every second of the wait. Gray is so yummy. Yes, I've resorted to food noises when describing this man. I could just spread him on a cracker. He's hot, he's attentive, he's in charge. And I loved every moment.
Depth: I want to talk so much about the depth of this story, but I don't want to give anything away. I will say this - it's not what you ever would expect. Like ever. The bad guys? They are seriously messed up. Like, I had to pick my jaw up off my kindle. YEAH. So, when you sit down to ready Defending Allye, make sure you have enough time to read it start to finish. That's really good advice. Because once you start, there's no way you're going to be able to stop reading until the very last page. It's an incredible story about living life to the fullest, loving with your whole heart and never giving up. It deserves far more than 5 stars.
